Pastel as a Painting Medium

Maureen Dorinda Pastels

Today, pastel paintings have the same stature as oil and watercolour as a major fine art medium.

A particle of pastel pigment, seen under a microscope, looks like a diamond with many facets. Pastel paintings reflect light like a prism, making them unique. In fact, pastel is considered the most permanent of all media; pastel paintings from the 16th century exist today, as fresh as the day they were painted.
